I have heard that this sail boat, the Shades of Blue, moored at the RiverWest Marina, has sailed around the world more than a few times. I loved the deep royal blue of the tarp and the deep orange of the life ring juxtaposed with the grunge browns of the mildly dilapidated docks. And, of course, there is the gull, just hanging out.

She’s Seen Better Days, just along the path past the RiverWest Marina and condominium complex, the Silver Challenger rested, dry-docked in an old lot for many years. She had once been a proud and mighty fishing boat on the BC coast. This was, I believe, the first boat I ever illustrated, and so many more have followed. My style has evolved and developed, but, still, this subject really does appeal to my particular aesthetic sensibilities; grungy, rusty, abandoned, slightly off-kilter, but, oh, so interestingly rich with texture and colour.

This is my last of four illustrations in the Roadside Motel  series, I worked on in 2021/2022. As a fan of road trips, and during the Covid pandemic when we couldn’t travel, I set myself the task of creating a series of imagined quirky motels that were each based on a chosen colour. This is the Starfish Motel. It’s a little festive and a little bit tropical, and there’s a pool, but also the beach is just a hop, skip and a jump away. Please enjoy, and stay awhile, all your worries will wash away. Oh, and the margaritas are always on the house!

A wonderful sunny (sun soaked) summer afternoon on Steveston Wharf in Richmond, British Columbia. This is a busy, colourful working dock scene typical of the Westcoast along the South Arm of the Fraser River. The yellow hull of the fishing boat in foreground is framed by the sky blue and silvers of background fishing boats and the pale browns of the weathered docks.

The Westham Island Herb Farm on Westham Island in Ladner, British Columbia, is such a wondrous place to visit in the summer and fall. Offerings include all the local seasonal produce, cutting flowers and local artisanal products. Owner Sharon Ellis has an eye for detail, creating layers of colour and interest for all visitors. One of the highlights is the Sunflower Lane. Many varieties of sunflowers are available there. I couldn’t resist illustrating these beauties last summer (2023) in all their glory.

The Breadbasket at Twilight, was a charmer belonging to our friend Jerry. It was a 1946 converted BC Ferry Double-Ender lifeboat that he purchased in Victoria, British Columbia and motored over to Ladner. The breadbasket was moored outside of Speed’s Pub in Ladner one evening and my son took photos of it resulting in this illustration. The soft light in the cabin and in the Wharfinger House windows in background against somewhat stormy skies set a foreboding, yet serene scene. The Breadbasket itself unfortunately sank about a year after I completed this piece.

All lined up and ready for the wrecking yard! I didn’t know it at the time (this seems to be a theme for me). This was illustrated from a series of images I captured at the Captain’s Cove Marina in Ladner, British Columbia. I can imagine the days past where these were rough and tumble fishing boats, working along the Fraser River, where the fish were in abundance and fishing for a living was a lucrative business. The colour palette is rust, orange, cream and sky blue.

This illustration is based on a series of images I captured while on a boat ride with my friend Bob in the Fall of 2023. This is Tucked in the Shadows depicting a group of old fishing Seine boats resting alongside a Norsk container barge in the South Arm of the Fraser River near Wellington Point in Ladner, British Columbia. Steely aluminum greys, river blues and rusty hues of the Westcoast fishing industry make up this restful colour palette.
