This illustration is based on a series of images I captured while on a boat ride in the South Arm of the Fraser River with my friend Bob on a glorious Fall morning in 2022. Depicted here is the iconic Westham Island Bridge and a rustic red barn in the background situated on the highly productive agricultural lands of Westham Island, in Delta, British Columbia.

Massey Marine Shop is Seen If You Look North from Delta St. in Ladner Village, The Massey Marine Supply building, Greets You with its Wonderful Colours and History. Framed with the village trees in early Autumn colours in the foreground and the line of Poplars that line Harbour Park across the slough in the background. The colours are rich greens, pale yellows, with the spark of the red door of this historic building: a fixture in this little Westcoast town.

On Speeds Dock is an Art Print First Designed as a Street Banner. Speed’s Pub is Nestled Along the Chilcotin Slough South Arm of the Fraser River in Ladner, BC. First designed as a street banner, the 3rd in a series, this was among some of my first illustrations ever. This is an image of Barry’s sailboat tied up to Speed’s Dock. Barry has lived on his boat here for many years. He was a great friend to Speed, the late owner of Speed’s Pub, and a legend in these parts. Greys, light blues and shades of taupe make up this tranquil colour palette.

This illustration is based on a series of images I captured while on a boat ride with my friend Bob in the Fall of 2023. This is River Sunrise depicting a beautiful sailboat moored alongside a floating home; one of many, along the shores of the Fraser River near the town of Ladner. The sunrise is reflected in the calm morning waters of the river. Hues of river blues with the yellow accents of Autumn and sunrise dominate this illustration’s colour palette.

When I first illustrated this Ladner River Scene of the Seven Seas Fish Co. Ltd., Seven Seas, Sloughside, in 2021 this is what I said: “This is the slough side perspective of the old Seven Seas Cannery. It is almost becoming an eyesore in our little harbour; complete with rust and graffiti, there is is still something almost graceful and charming about its current state of dishevelment. The layers of all the years are so obvious yet appealing somehow?” 2 years ago, in 2022, this building was demolished to make room for some new riverside development still in the works.

I have heard that this sail boat, the Shades of Blue, moored at the RiverWest Marina, has sailed around the world more than a few times. I loved the deep royal blue of the tarp and the deep orange of the life ring juxtaposed with the grunge browns of the mildly dilapidated docks. And, of course, there is the gull, just hanging out.

She’s Seen Better Days, just along the path past the RiverWest Marina and condominium complex, the Silver Challenger rested, dry-docked in an old lot for many years. She had once been a proud and mighty fishing boat on the BC coast. This was, I believe, the first boat I ever illustrated, and so many more have followed. My style has evolved and developed, but, still, this subject really does appeal to my particular aesthetic sensibilities; grungy, rusty, abandoned, slightly off-kilter, but, oh, so interestingly rich with texture and colour.

A wonderful sunny (sun soaked) summer afternoon on Steveston Wharf in Richmond, British Columbia. This is a busy, colourful working dock scene typical of the Westcoast along the South Arm of the Fraser River. The yellow hull of the fishing boat in foreground is framed by the sky blue and silvers of background fishing boats and the pale browns of the weathered docks.

The Westham Island Herb Farm on Westham Island in Ladner, British Columbia, is such a wondrous place to visit in the summer and fall. Offerings include all the local seasonal produce, cutting flowers and local artisanal products. Owner Sharon Ellis has an eye for detail, creating layers of colour and interest for all visitors. One of the highlights is the Sunflower Lane. Many varieties of sunflowers are available there. I couldn’t resist illustrating these beauties last summer (2023) in all their glory.
